Sorshia Christian College, a newly established and rapidly developing institution affiliated to Manipur University, has reported the successful observance of World Intellectual Property Day 2025 under the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP.”At the event, held in the Sorshia Christian College at Mapao Zingtun, Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Director, Sorshia Christian College, gave the keynote address by emphasising that IPR is the lifeblood of creativity and innovation. He noted that—from the folk melodies of Manipur’s villages to breakthroughs in agricultural technology every idea deserves recognition and reward, and he called upon attendees to view IP protection as the foundation for future enterprises.
In keeping with the day’s musical theme, student performers provided several “beat of music” interludes—short percussion and vocal pieces inspired by traditional Manipuri rhythms—between addresses, reinforcing how music and IP intersect.During the course of the morning, distinguished Guests of Honour addressed various facets of IP. Haobam Chitra Devi, Retired Assistant Director of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur, emphasised that Manipur’s film industry, where local stories are brought to life on screen, relies on robust copyright protection to thrive. Ms. Devi therefore called for stronger public awareness campaigns. Maisnam Chanu Liklainu, Chief Finance Officer for RD & PR, Government of Manipur, highlighted the economic incentives of IP, explaining that artisans and entrepreneurs who learn to monetise their creations through grants, subsidies, or licensing. Mr. Asheibam Bele Singh, M.Sc. in Organic Agriculture from Wageningen University, drew parallels between agricultural patents and community sustainability, observing that patenting eco-friendly farming techniques. Thockchom Biren Singh, guest faculty at Needy Home Academy, stressed the importance of embedding IP and financial literacy in school and college curricula. Dr. Raman Chance, Associate Professor of History at DMU, placed IP within a broader historical continuum, noting that modern IP regimes build upon long-standing traditions.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Kh. Somendro Singh, Former Director, Institute of Cooperative Management in Guwahati, observed that their collaboration exemplifies how partnerships between government and academia can transform novel ideas into viable livelihoods.The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by N. Ratan Meetei, Director, AIMS, who acknowledged the contributions of the organising committee, student volunteers, and all invited dignitaries.
