A joint sit-in protest was held at Nongpok Sekmai NESA Ground today, with participation from a wide spectrum of civil society organisations and community groups condemning recent incidents of violence in the state.
The protest was jointly organised by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol, All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), along with Aunba Nupi Khunnai Lamjing Meira Lup (Nupi Khunnai-2), Thoubal District, various local clubs, and representatives from multiple communities including Kwarok Maring and several Tangkhul bodies such as Heingang Lok, Kharan, Leihaoram, Sotun, Lungther, Irong, Sadar Khumbi, Ringpam, Meariland and Saram Tangkhul groups. Shikhong Meitei Pangal Women’s Association also took part in the demonstration.
Participants strongly condemned the recent bomb attack at Tronglaobi in which two children were killed. The protestors also denounced an alleged firing incident involving Central Reserve Police Force personnel near their camp, which reportedly resulted in the death of three civilians. Another incident highlighted during the protest involved the killing of a civilian who was reportedly shot while travelling by car from Imphal towards Ukhrul.
Expressing grief and anger over the incidents, the demonstrators demanded accountability and justice, stating that repeated acts of violence have created fear and insecurity among the public. Placards and slogans reflected calls for immediate action to prevent further loss of civilian lives.
Several leaders addressed the gathering, including AMUCO Vice President Santosh Koijam, AMAWOVA President Y. Kunjarani, AMUCO Organisation Secretary Laishram Krishanachandra, Poirei Leimarol President Shoraisam Memcha and COHR Chairman Phulindro Konsam.
Speakers criticised what they described as inadequate response to recent incidents and called for stronger measures to ensure civilian safety. They also urged authorities to take concrete steps to restore normalcy and prevent recurrence of such acts.
