Tension gripped parts of Ukhrul district on Saturday after an Assam Rifles convoy allegedly forced its way through barricades set up by villagers at Talui, with local sources claiming that two civilians sustained injuries in the incident.
According to local inputs, the convoy was moving from Ukhrul headquarters at around 1 pm when it encountered barricades erected by residents at the entrance of Talui village. The barricades were reportedly put in place by villagers to regulate movement amid the prevailing tense situation in the hill district.
Sources alleged that as the convoy advanced, multiple rounds of gunfire were heard, triggering panic among residents and creating a volatile situation in the area. Eyewitness accounts described the scene as chaotic, with civilians scrambling for safety.
Further reports indicated that a similar confrontation occurred near Hoomi, where residents again attempted to stop the convoy. Additional firing was reportedly heard during the standoff, intensifying fear among the local population.
According to unconfirmed reports, those injured include a woman from Talui village and a man from Hoomi. Both were rushed to Ukhrul District Hospital, though their condition could not be immediately ascertained.
There was no official statement from the Assam Rifles or district authorities at the time of filing this report, and the exact sequence of events remains unverified.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in parts of Manipur, where movement of security forces and restrictions imposed by local communities continue to be highly sensitive and, at times, confrontational.
