Seminar on future of Printing Industry highlights challenges and opportunities amid Act East Policy push

Amid growing concerns over the declining state of the printing industry in Manipur, the All Manipur Press Association (AMPA) organised a one-day seminar-cum-roadshow on the theme “Future of Printing Industry and India’s Act East Policy” today at Classic Grande, Imphal.
The seminar was attended by Anurag Bajpai, IFS, Additional Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industries), Government of Manipur, as the Chief Guest. Other key speakers included Jaiveer Singh, President of the Indian Printing Packaging & Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA), Akham Joykumar, Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM), and Sunil Khurana, Vice President (East), All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP). YK Dhiren, President of AMPA, presided over the function.
During the technical sessions and keynote addresses, participants acknowledged the severe hardships faced by the local printing industry. Many printing units in Manipur, especially smaller establishments, are struggling to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and digitisation. The high cost of machinery, lack of access to skilled labour, and limited infrastructure were noted as significant challenges hindering the sector’s growth.
Speakers also highlighted that while printing remains crucial for education, government documentation, packaging, and media, the demand for traditional printing has sharply declined due to digital alternatives. This has led to reduced revenues and growing unemployment in the printing workforce.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest reportedly encouraged the local industry to explore new possibilities under the Act East Policy, which aims to promote trade and cultural exchange with Southeast Asian countries. He observed that with proper policy intervention and technological upgrades, Manipur’s printing sector could tap into cross-border markets and regain its economic viability.
Technical sessions explored emerging trends such as eco-friendly printing, automation, and digital print technology. Experts suggested that collaboration between local printers and national industry bodies like IPAMA and AIFMP could open up opportunities for training, innovation, and business expansion.
The event also featured the release of a souvenir, felicitation of key sponsors and dignitaries, and cultural interaction. AMPA President YK Dhiren emphasised the need for consistent policy support and sustainable business models to revive the printing ecosystem in the state.
