A seasonal seed distribution program sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is set to benefit farmers across five districts of Manipur. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Manipur, and Seva Bharati Manipur, with the objective of promoting sustainable agricultural development in the state.
Under the program, a total of 190 seed packets are being distributed, each containing seven different varieties of crops, including bottle gourd (Khongdrum), sponge gourd (Sebot), okra (Velendri), bitter gourd (Karot Akhabi), cowpea (Lobiya Hawai), and brinjal (Khamen Makhal 2).
District-wise, Imphal will receive the largest share with 70 packets, followed by Thoubal with 50 packets, including 20 packets for Heirok. Bishnupur is allocated 30 packets, while Senapati and Tamenglong will receive 20 packets each.
The program is expected to support local farmers by providing them with quality seeds that can enhance crop productivity and improve household incomes. Organizers said the initiative reflects a collective effort to strengthen food security and rural development in Manipur.
Seva Bharati Manipur and RSS have been actively involved in several community welfare projects, and their partnership with ICAR is seen as a significant step towards empowering the farming community.
