Ruckus marks second day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session; Both Houses adjourned

New Delhi, July 22:

The second day of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament witnessed repeated disruptions, forcing the adjournment of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha till the next sitting. The proceedings were marred by sloganeering and uproar from the opposition benches, who demanded immediate discussions on issues such as Operation Sindoor, the recent Pahalgam terror attack, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar.
The session began with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju asserting the government’s readiness to deliberate on matters of national concern. However, despite the assurance, members of opposition parties stormed the well of the House, raising slogans and holding placards. In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla tried to continue with the Zero Hour and appealed to members to raise issues concerning farmers and public welfare. As the commotion persisted, the House was initially adjourned until noon.
In the Rajya Sabha, which is now presided over by Deputy Chairman Harivansh following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation, similar scenes unfolded. Opposition MPs continued their protest, prompting the Deputy Chairman to adjourn the House.
When both Houses reconvened around noon, the chaos resumed. The disruptions left little room for legislative business. The Lok Sabha was subsequently adjourned till 2 pm and then for the remainder of the day, while the Rajya Sabha also failed to make progress due to continued protest by opposition members.
Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition for stalling parliamentary proceedings and accused them of wasting public resources. He reiterated that the government was open to discussions but would not be held hostage by unruly behaviour. The BJP’s Jagdambika Pal also stated that Operation Sindoor had already been scheduled for discussion under the Business Advisory Committee.
The Monsoon Session, which began on July 21 and is expected to continue until August 21, is likely to witness intense debates and confrontations. The opposition remains firm in its demand for detailed deliberations on sensitive national security and electoral issues. As both Houses remain adjourned for the day, the political temperature in Parliament is expected to rise further in the coming days.
