In the Rajya Sabha yesterday, Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba urged the Union Government to adopt a two-pronged construction strategy for the long-pending Jiribam–Imphal railway line. He highlighted that while the 55.36-km Jiribam–Khongsang section has been commissioned since September 2022, the remaining segments—Khongsang–Noney (18.25 km) and Noney–Imphal (37.02 km)—remain incomplete.
The MP stressed that the railway is Manipur’s lifeline, offering a reliable alternative amid frequent bandhs, extortion, landslides, and poor highway conditions that disrupt movement of essential goods and people. Warning that the project may take another two to three years for completion, he urged simultaneous construction from the Imphal side alongside the ongoing work from Jiribam to hasten progress.
Leishemba emphasised that fast-tracking this project is crucial to ensuring unhindered connectivity and addressing critical supply chain challenges faced by the region.
