Imphal, Dec 12:

Speaking on the occasion of Nupi Lal Day 2024, RK Meghen reflected on the historic struggles of Manipuri women, emphasizing their role in resisting colonial and social injustices, and called for renewed unity to address contemporary challenges.
RK Meghen recounted the key events that marked the Nupi Lal movements, beginning with the first Nupi Lal in 1904. Following the British conquest of Manipur in 1891, the political agent’s residence in Imphal was destroyed in a fire, and Manipuri men were forced to collect logs and materials to rebuild it. The women’s collective resistance to this imposition laid the foundation of the first Nupi Lal.
He highlighted the second Nupi Lal, which arose from women’s protests against the artificial scarcity of rice, a consequence of colonial policies that exacerbated the suffering of the local population.
Touching on the emergence of the Nisha Bandh movement, RK Meghen linked it to the beginnings of the third Nupi Lal. This movement, initially aimed at curbing alcohol addiction, evolved into the powerful Meira Paibi Lup, which continues to play a crucial role in protecting and advocating for the community. He stressed that the essence of these movements was not just for women but for the entire society.
Addressing the current situation in Manipur, RK Meghen expressed concern over the deteriorating state of affairs and urged women’s organizations to draw strength from the legacy of Nupi Lal. “We must face the challenges and work together to build a new Manipur,” he appealed.
He accused the government of employing divisive strategies to weaken the Meitei community, alleging that policies were designed to create disunity and exclusivity. RK Meghen warned against attempts to turn Manipur into a fractured state and urged people to reflect on these issues to safeguard the future of the state.
