RIMS observes World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with an awareness programme

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in collaboration with the College of Nursing and the Breastfeeding Promotion Alliance of Manipur (BPAM), observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 today at OPD Complex, RIMS Hospital, Imphal, promoting breastfeeding for maternal and infant health while engaging OPD patients and attendants in community-based awareness activities under Special Manthan on Kayakalp.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal, in the presence of Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Imphal, Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), Prof. B. Praveen Reddy, Principal, Dental College, Heads of Departments and Units, faculty members, staff, students, MSS (Manipur Security Service), CRED and public.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma stated that breastfeeding is one of the most cost-effective interventions for ensuring healthy child growth and development, providing optimal nutrition, strengthening infants’ immunity, and offering significant health benefits to mothers while contributing to a healthier society. He urged healthcare professionals, families, and the community to actively promote and support optimal breastfeeding practices and emphasized the importance of sustained awareness, counselling, and community engagement in improving maternal and child health outcomes.

An Exhibition-cum-Awareness Session at the OPD Complex featured educational models, demonstration stalls, and distribution of IEC materials to promote optimal breastfeeding. Visitors interacted with healthcare professionals and learned about exclusive breastfeeding. Prof. Kh. Pratima Devi, Department of Obsterics and gynaecology delivered an awareness talk with a video presentation on World Breastfeeding Week 2026 and its theme, highlighting breastfeeding’s health, nutritional, developmental, and environmental benefits. The programme received an encouraging public response, reinforcing collective efforts to promote breastfeeding.
