Manipur’s eminent playwright and cultural icon Chana Lukhoi passed away today at his residence in Chana village, Imphal East, after a prolonged illness. He was 74 years old.
Chana Lukhoi was widely regarded as a towering figure in Manipuri literature and theater. His contributions to the art form earned him numerous accolades at both state and national levels throughout his illustrious career. His plays consistently ranked first in Shumang Leela competitions, solidifying his legacy as a master dramatist and cultural ambassador. Among his iconic works are Sana-patki Thariktha, Chaina-pung, Hingnabagi Dabi, Leishabigi Machado, Eegi Nong, Keishamthong Thoibi, Love 2000, and Shabi Shanou Express.
Born on April 10, 1950, in Oinam Tunan, Imphal East, Chana Lukhoi was the son of Oinam Mani and Irungbam Ningol Amu Leima. He dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Manipuri culture and literature from the tender age of 12. His marriage to Kaidem Nungthilchaibi blessed him with three sons, Okensana (Punshi), Lamjing, and Meira, and two daughters, Mangalleima and Linthoinganbi. He also had a stepdaughter, Langlen, from his second marriage to Kala (daughter of Kantajit).
Chana Lukhoi’s journey as a playwright and performer was marked by a relentless commitment to the advancement of Manipuri culture. A prolific writer of Manipuri Puya stories, he played a significant role in shaping the traditional art form of Sumang Leela. Over 150 of his plays were staged, captivating audiences with themes deeply rooted in Manipuri ethos and traditions.
In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Chana Lukhoi was an active contributor to Manipuri literary circles, writing columns for publications like the Sangai Express (Manipuri Edition). His exceptional talent earned him 18 Best Script awards and nine Second Best Script awards from prestigious institutions, including the Manipur State Kala Academy and the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council.
His influence extended beyond Manipur as he participated in cultural exchange programs in Bangladesh and Myanmar, promoting Manipuri traditions and Sumang Leela. Chana Lukhoi also served as a member of the Kangla Religious Committee and as a faculty member in the Dance Department of the Manipur University of Culture, where he mentored numerous aspiring artists.
Among his many accolades, Chana Lukhoi was honored with the IKAM Award from the Manipuri Development Trust (Bangladesh), the Peeba Chingmi Tammi Nungshi Khudol Award from the Meitei National Front, the Nongthombam Birendrajit Award, and the Ibuyaima Shumang Leela Award. His literary works include Charei Huimadon Leima, Eegi Nong, Sanapatki Thariktha, and Nupi Lal da Thouna Phabi Shing. Additionally, he made notable contributions to films like Keishamthong Thoibi, Nungshibi Ahing, Sekmai Turel, and Leiyeshigi Wangbada. His performances in Manipuri music, radio, and television—notably with All India Radio Imphal and DDK Imphal—further underscored his versatile talents.
