Former Chief Minister of Manipur, Okram Ibobi Singh, paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during a solemn ceremony at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, held to honour the late leader following his recent passing.
Speaking to the press after offering floral tributes, Okram Ibobi Singh fondly remembered Dr. Manmohan Singh’s immense contributions to Manipur and the country. He recounted a pivotal moment in the early 2000s when Manipur was grappling with severe economic challenges. Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being in power at the Centre, Dr. Manmohan Singh secured a crucial meeting for Okram Ibobi Singh with the then Finance Minister, facilitating the resolution of the state’s economic crisis.
“He even intitiated policies for bringing industries in the state. But, unfortunately, now these policies are forgotten” Okram Ibobi added. “Dr. Manmohan Singh cared deeply for the people of Manipur and worked tirelessly to ensure economic stability in the region,” Okram Ibobi Singh said.
He praised the former Prime Minister’s transformative impact on India’s economy, noting, “Dr. Manmohan Singh revived the country’s economy and is now even hailed by BJP leaders as the father of GST.”
Okram Ibobi Singh further emphasized Dr. Manmohan Singh’s global stature, describing him as a leader admired and respected by intellectuals and politicians worldwide. Addressing perceptions of Dr. Manmohan Singh as a quiet leader, he remarked, “People say he was quiet, but he was a man of action who achieved results with love and care. Despite his reserved nature, he never feared facing the media. He always welcomed journalists and treated them with dignity.”
MPCC President K. Meghachandra, MLA K. Ranjit, MLA Th. Lokeshwar, MLA O. Surjakumar and other office bearers of the MPCC attended the floral paying tributes at Congress Bhavan.
