Protests over Tronglaobi attack continue across Manipur; CPI stages sit-in at Irawat Bhavan

Protests in connection with the Tronglaobi attack continued at various places across Manipur on Monday, with political parties and civil society groups demanding justice for the victims.
The Manipur State Council of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a sit-in protest at Irawat Bhavan in Imphal, condemning the incident and the prevailing law and order situation in the state. The party demanded justice for the victims of the Tronglaobi attack and called for convening a special session of the State Assembly to adopt a resolution for the detection of illegal migrants. It also criticised the state government for what it termed as failure to maintain law and order.
Protest demonstrations were also reported from other locations in the state.
The protests follow the April 7 bomb attack at Tronglaobi, in which two children were killed while asleep and their mother was injured. Subsequent demonstrations over the incident reportedly led to firing, in which three persons were killed and five others injured.
On Sunday evening, the Oinam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup organised a candlelight vigil at Oinam Keithel, where residents gathered to mourn the victims and express their anger. Around 600 people, including members of Meira Paibi groups and local residents, took part in the programme.
Participants lit torches in memory of the deceased and observed a two-minute silence. Protesters raised slogans condemning the killing of children and demanded action against those responsible.
Speaking at the gathering, President of Oinam Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Mutum Roma, said that even in conflict situations, harm to women and children is unacceptable and called for strict action against those responsible. A participant also questioned the targeting of children, stating that innocent lives should not be subjected to violence.
