Imphal, April 12:
A mass protest rally cum sit-in demonstration was held today at the Triangular Village Ground, Kiyamgei, condemning the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill 2025. The protest was organized by Jamiat-Ul-Ulama, Keirao Kendra, with participation from locals and representatives of various communities.
The protesters expressed strong resentment over the bill, alleging that it directly undermines the religious rights and practices of the Muslim community. Speaking at the gathering, leaders of Jamiat-Ul-Ulama questioned the intention behind the amendment and described it as a deliberate attempt to interfere in Islamic religious affairs.
“Waqf is not private property. It is a charitable endowment made in the name of Allah, intended for religious and welfare purposes. While income can be generated from Waqf properties, it must be used for the benefit of those eligible for sadaka and zakat,” a speaker said.
The protestors criticized the central government, particularly the Prime Minister and Home Minister, for passing the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025. They alleged that the move was politically motivated and aimed at enabling broader control over Waqf assets, which they feared could eventually be misused or diverted.
Participants warned that the amendment would pave the way for further marginalization of Muslim communities and their institutions. They described the act as unconstitutional and demanded its immediate repeal. Placards calling for the rejection and withdrawal of the bill were displayed during the protest.
“This amendment is a direct assault on our religious rights. It must be repealed at once,” said a member of Jamiat-Ul-Ulama, who also stated that similar sentiments were being echoed across the country.
The protest concluded with a unified declaration that the movement will continue until the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 is repealed. Organizers also stated that the resistance is not politically driven but rooted in faith, asserting that the movement is carried out with full belief in divine justice.
