Power recruitment candidates set June 30 deadline, threaten statewide agitation

Candidates who appeared in the 2019 recruitment examination for the Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) and Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL) have demanded immediate revocation of the recruitment cancellation order and declaration of the results, warning of an intensified agitation if the government fails to respond by June 30.

Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Press Club today, the candidates said the Government of Manipur had issued a recruitment notification in 2019 to fill 907 vacant posts in the two power utilities. Although the written examination was conducted in January 2020, the results have remained pending for more than six years.

The candidates stated that they had repeatedly submitted memoranda to the then Chief Minister, Power Minister, Ministers, MLAs, departmental heads and other authorities, seeking declaration of the results. According to them, successive governments had repeatedly assured that the recruitment process would be completed.

They recalled that ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, the then Chief Minister had stated in a televised interview that all pending government recruitment processes would be completed after the elections.

They further pointed out that during the Assembly session on February 24, 2023, the then Power Minister had informed the House that the recruitment process had been completed, clearance from the Department of Personnel (DP) had been obtained, and the results would be declared shortly.

The candidates also cited another televised interview on March 15, 2024, in which the then Chief Minister reportedly said there was no proposal to cancel the MSPDCL and MSPCL recruitment process and that all pending recruitment results would be declared. They further said that during the Assembly session held on August 6, 2024, the then Power Minister had assured that the results would be announced before the end of December 2024.

However, before the recruitment process was concluded, President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur. The candidates said the Governor subsequently issued an order on September 2, 2025, cancelling the recruitment process.
Calling the cancellation arbitrary, the candidates said they challenged the order before the Manipur High Court, which stayed the cancellation. They argued that the recruitment process had already been completed and had received clearance from the Department of Personnel, making its cancellation unjustified.

The candidates appealed to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to personally intervene and resolve the issue. They said fresh memoranda have also been submitted to the Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs and other concerned authorities of the present government.

Demanding that the cancellation order be revoked and the long-pending recruitment results declared, the candidates sought a clear response from the government by June 30.

They warned that if no satisfactory response is received within the deadline, they will launch a series of democratic protests from July 1, including sit-in demonstrations, a gathering at the Chief Minister’s bungalow, hunger strikes, bandhs, general strikes and other forms of agitation.
