Importance of sensitizing public regarding the trends of increasing crime against women and children in the state and how to identify the gaps and challenges to deliver justice to the victims were discussed today in a “Penal Discussion on Speedy Justice in relation with Crime Against Women and Children” held at Classic Grande Chingmeirong, Imphal.
Taking part in the discussion as a panelist, Urikhimbam Nobokishore, Secy. United NGOs Mission Manipur spoke on the sexual crimes against women committed by Armed forces during counter insurgency operations in the State under the shadow of draconian act AFSPA.
Nobokishor further pointed out the status of women in the present days and that of those before the merger of the erstwhile kingdom to the Indian Union.
He also revisited several heinous sexual crime cases committed by Armed forces of both state and central for which both denied to file cases or to investigate.
He blamed government turning India undemocratic country by neglecting such sensitive cases. “Neglecting or denying sexual or rape cases means the government consider it as normal cases and thinks women as ‘nothing’”, added Nobokishor.
He further deliberated on the urgent need of setting up of special mechanism in Judiciary to revive the cases of the victims of AFSPA.
While Advocate Supriya, Secy All Manipur Bar Association, Priyadashini Gangte,Lecturer Christian Damdei College,Senapati,L Pishak, Newlife Foundation were among other panelists while Arun Irengbam, Editor Echel Expressed moderated the discussion.
The discussion was conducted as part of 16 day long observance of Activism Against Gender Based Violence From Nov, 25-Dec 10 jointly by WAD, COWF, NEDF,UNMM, and DVSF. And it was conducted in connection with the World wide observance of International Human Rights Day.
