Imphal, Nov 30:
Imphal witnessed a significant gathering today as the One-Day Convention on the Protection of Indigenous People of Manipur took place at the Sangai Hill Imphal Hotel, Kabo Leikai North AOC. The event was organized under the aegis of the Adivasi Samanvay Manch (India), in collaboration with the Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) and the Platform for Protection of Indigenous People.
The convention featured Thokchom Satyabrata, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, as the Chief Guest. Notable attendees included Dr. Sunil Prahar, National President of Adivasi Samanvay Manch (India), along with Retd. Prof. W. Nabakumar and Prof. R.K. Narendra, who contributed as resource persons.
During the event, Mutum Churamani, Secretary of Administration for MMTU, emphasized the critical need to protect indigenous communities nationwide. He highlighted that the MMTU had previously conducted campaigns across various states in September, which culminated in engagements with leaders of the Adivasi Samanvay Manch (India).
Churamani shared that during these interactions, the MMTU provided detailed insights into the ongoing crisis in Manipur, including its origins and demographic challenges.
These discussions shed light on issues such as the influx of illegal migrants and its impact on the indigenous population, not just in Manipur but across the Northeast.
He further noted that the concerns raised by the MMTU resonated with the leadership of Adivasi Samanvay Manch (India). This alignment of understanding led to the acceptance of MMTU’s invitation to host the one-day national conference.
The convention marks a crucial step towards fostering dialogue and collaboration to address the challenges faced by indigenous communities in Manipur and beyond.
