The Naga Journalists’ Union Manipur (NJUM) has stated that a fact-finding team was constituted to ascertain details of the incident in which Hornbill TV journalist Dip Saikia was reportedly injured by pellets fired from an airgun. The shooter was identified as 26-year-old Reiveinii Ramai, son of Dale of Phuba Khuman village, presently residing at Council, Senapati.
According to NJUM, the urgency to verify the facts stemmed from the circulation of conflicting reports on social media and news platforms, some of which carried political or ethnic undertones. The union expressed concern over the recurring harassment and attacks faced by journalists, reiterating the responsibility of the media to present the truth.
A three-member team was formed and visited Laii village under Tungjoy Police Station in Senapati district. The team met police officials, village leaders, and inspected the site where the incident took place. They also interacted with Ramai, who was in police custody, and spoke with Saikia, who is currently undergoing treatment in Guwahati, over the phone.
In its preliminary findings, NJUM said that Ramai was reportedly unaware of Saikia’s presence when he fired the airgun, as the incident occurred in rainy and foggy conditions. Villagers only came to know about the matter when Saikia was taken to Laii Primary Health Centre for first aid. It was further informed that Ramai had voluntarily gone to the health centre upon learning about the incident, where he apologised to Saikia in front of village authorities and the headman. He also expressed his willingness to extend assistance during Saikia’s treatment.
An FIR (No. 02(08)2025) under Sections 109/117 of the BNS and 25(1C) of the Arms Act was registered at Tungjoy Police Station on August 31, 2025. NJUM also acknowledged the prompt action of Senapati Police in detaining the accused.
The union clarified that its report was not a final verdict but an attempt to verify facts while the investigation remains ongoing. It expressed willingness to cooperate with any further inquiry into the case. While condemning the use of dangerous devices such as airguns in public areas, NJUM called for a fair and just investigation to ensure accountability.
