NIA’s arrest of MPA officials sparks outcry from Pambei led UNLF

IT News
Imphal, Mar 18:

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is facing criticism following its arrest of MPA Chief of Army Staff In-Charge Thokchom Sidabamapu, Chief Intelligence Laimayum Ingba, and Sgt. Thounaojam Laandaba on March 13, 2024. The Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has vehemently condemned these arrests, arguing that they violate the terms outlined in the peace agreement between the party and the Government of India, which was signed on November 29, 2023.
Charairongba Thokchom, media coordinator for the Pambei-led UNLF, stated that upon learning of the arrests, UNLF officials engaged with the Chief Minister of Manipur. Expressing dismay at the lack of prior notification regarding the arrests, the Chief Minister found himself unable to intervene as the Home Ministry justified the arrests on the grounds of an inter-state case, beyond his jurisdiction. Nonetheless, he pledged to work closely with the central government to facilitate the swift release of the detained individuals.
Additionally, UNLF representatives reached out to higher authorities within the Government of India and the NIA to address the situation. The NIA confirmed the detention of the three individuals and announced that discussions or meetings related to the case would be postponed until the investigation concludes. UNLF representatives also held discussions with members of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), stressing the urgency of releasing the detainees to avoid disrupting the ongoing peace negotiations. The IB assured them of a prompt investigation into the matter.
The Pambei led UNLF officials voiced serious concerns that the actions of the NIA could jeopardize the progress of the peace talks, hinting at a deliberate effort to sabotage the achievements made thus far. To rebuild trust and ensure the continuation of the peace process, Pambei led UNLF has called upon the Government of India to drop the alleged baseless charges against its MPA’s Chief of Army In-Charge, Chief Intelligence, and Sgt. Th. Laandaba, urging for their immediate release.
