NESO calls for immediate detection and deportation of illegal migrants

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has reiterated its demand for immediate detection and deportation of illegal migrants across the North Eastern region, stressing the urgent need to safeguard the demographic integrity and political rights of indigenous communities. This resolution was adopted during NESO’s Executive Meeting held on August 6 at the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) headquarters in Guwahati.
Representatives from all eight constituent states attended the meeting, with discussions focusing heavily on the demographic imbalance caused by unchecked migration. NESO warned that further delay in addressing the issue would result in irreversible damage to the region’s ethnic composition. The student body urged the Union Government to act decisively, beginning with the identification and deportation of undocumented migrants.
The organisation called for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the entire region, asserting that only a uniform NRC process can effectively filter out non-citizens. NESO also demanded the completion of border fencing in states like Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, noting that porous borders continue to facilitate illegal entry.
Expressing concern over the ongoing unrest in Manipur, NESO criticised the Centre’s inaction and called for urgent political intervention to restore peace. The meeting also announced a new initiative to address under-representation in civil services, with selected aspirants from NE states to receive UPSC coaching in Delhi from September 1.
As part of its mobilisation strategy, NESO will stage simultaneous sit-in protests in the state capitals on August 18. Memoranda highlighting key demands—including deportation of illegal migrants and NRC expansion—will be submitted to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, and state leaders.
The Manipur delegation included NESO Advisor Sinam Prakash, Wangjam Sanatomba, Prikeshwor Moirangthem, and Lukram Malangba.
