Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra today came down heavily on the NDA-led Central government for extending President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, terming it a serious blow to democratic values and the federal spirit enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a free medical camp held at the club building of Lamboi Khongnangkhong Club and United Friendship and Library Club in the Uripok Assembly Constituency, Meghachandra said the move to extend President’s Rule bypasses the will of the people.
He blamed the BJP MLAs in the state for the political vacuum that led to the extension. “President’s Rule has been imposed and extended because the BJP, despite having the numbers, failed to elect a capable leader to steer the government,” he stated.
“President’s Rule is meant to be a temporary measure to restore peace and order. But if it continues to be extended due to alleged law and order failures, it sets a dangerous and unprecedented trend. This extension undermines democratic institutions and erodes constitutional governance,” Meghachandra said.
He further criticized both the NDA government at the Centre and the former BJP-led government in the state for their lack of initiative in resolving the ongoing crisis. According to him, neither government made serious efforts to draft a concrete roadmap for peace and reconciliation.
The MPCC chief also condemned the ruling party and other political actors for failing to convene an all-party meeting to deliberate on the crisis that has gripped the state for over a year. He accused the BJP of deliberately avoiding a consultative process with leaders of all political parties.
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Meghachandra said, “The Prime Minister has remained silent on the Manipur crisis for more than two years. His continued silence is deeply disappointing and reflects the BJP’s intent to allow the President’s Rule to linger.”
Meghachandra asserted that the current political and administrative uncertainty could have been avoided if the BJP had shown responsible leadership and democratic will.
