The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has demanded that the state government take up a suo motu case into alleged irregularities in the distribution of relief materials and one-time financial assistance meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staying in relief camps under Moirang Assembly Constituency.
Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan today, Chief Spokesperson Hareshwar Goshwami accused the sitting MLA of Moirang of misrepresenting facts and claimed that the distribution of aid was marred by discrepancies. He said that revelations obtained through the Right to Information Act (RTI) have exposed serious irregularities in both the allocation and utilization of relief funds.
According to the RTI response, the government sanctioned lakhs of rupees for one-time financial assistance and for procurement of essential relief materials for IDPs in Moirang. However, the actual expenditure records reflect inflated figures and questionable entries that do not match the ground realities. Many displaced families reported either not receiving the promised cash assistance or being handed meagre rations inconsistent with the sanctioned amounts.
Goshwami alleged that the MLA in question publicly claimed to have personally distributed financial aid to IDPs, yet the RTI documents suggest otherwise. The findings point towards possible diversion of funds and mismanagement, raising concerns of corruption at the cost of vulnerable communities.
The MPCC spokesperson further held the ruling BJP responsible for Manipur’s recurring turmoil, recalling that the June Uprising of 2001 occurred under BJP rule at the Centre, while the present ethnic crisis is unfolding under BJP-led governments both at the Centre and the State. “Manipur always faces dark times under BJP rule. The party seems to bring unrest whenever it governs this land,” he asserted.
Goshwami urged the Governor and relevant authorities to immediately institute an independent probe into the matter, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure that relief materials and financial assistance reach the displaced people without bias or manipulation.
