Manipur University has put on hold its earlier directive mandating the use of Hindi in official noting and drafting.
According to Office Order No. 279, issued on Tuesday by Registrar Prof. M. Premjit Singh, the university cited “procedural lapses” as the reason for keeping the previous order, dated August 29, 2025, in abeyance until further notice.
The earlier order had instructed the adoption of Hindi in official communications within the university. However, the latest notification clarifies that the directive will not be implemented pending further review and approval.
The decision comes against the backdrop of ongoing debates in the Northeast regarding language policy and the use of Hindi in administrative and educational spaces. The university’s clarification signals a pause in enforcement, leaving the matter open for reconsideration by the competent authorities.
