Imphal, Aug 29:
The Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) today accused both the central and state governments of violating the rights of the common people as guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
In a statement, the MMWO expressed that, in addition to the prolonged crisis causing various hardships for the people, the prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed. Speaking to the media, MMWO President Boboi Korimayum said, “Today’s events are tomorrow’s history. When future generations discuss history, the fate of the indigenous people will become history. It is essential that today’s generation takes responsibility to act now.”
He emphasized the need for everyone to take action, stating that during the ongoing crisis, people have faced tear gas and mock bombs for merely voicing their demands. He highlighted the government’s disproportionate response, where even a small protest in hill areas, involving just 10 to 20 people blocking national highways illegally, would lead to a severe crackdown by state and central forces. Korimayum criticized this as an unfair use of force, reflecting poorly on the Indian government’s approach towards the people of Manipur.
He also pointed out the dire conditions in relief camps, where countless individuals are suffering, with many losing their lives due to inadequate support. Korimayum stressed the need for collective action to prevent further deterioration, urging people to take responsibility for their future. He warned that failure to act now would lead to even greater suffering in the future.
