A two-day training program on “Human Rights in India” commenced today at the Manipur University Court Hall. The event, organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education and the Department of Law at Manipur University, is sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The program was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, who underscored the critical importance of human rights education. In his address, the Vice Chancellor announced that the Centre for Human Rights will introduce a Master’s degree in Human Rights starting this academic session. This new course builds upon the Centre’s existing certificate and diploma offerings and marks a significant advancement in the university’s efforts to enhance human rights protection.
The VC also noted the NHRC’s ongoing efforts since its establishment in 1993 to promote human rights awareness through various programs. He emphasized that the new Master’s program is a direct response to the increasing demand for higher-level human rights education and reiterated the university’s commitment to addressing critical human rights issues.
The inaugural function was presided over by Prof. Th. Purnima Devi, Dean of the School of Social Science at MU. Distinguished guests included Prof. Romeshchandra Borpatra Gohain, Retired Dean of the Faculty of Law at Guwahati University, Dr. Atul Borgohain, a renowned physician and writer from Assam, and Dr. Y. Premananda Singh, Head of the Department at MU.
In the morning’s technical session, Prof. Romeshchandra Borpatra Gohain delivered a keynote address on “Human Rights: Principles and Practices,” setting the tone for the discussions and training to follow.
