Imphal, Sept 28:
Delegates of the Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) met with Samir Kshirsagar, Chief Secretary of the RSS, and various leaders at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This meeting was part of MMTU’s ongoing nationwide campaign to advocate for the inclusion of the Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list under Article 342(1) of the Indian Constitution.
The MMTU delegation, which included M. Churamani Meetei, Secretary of Administration, and H. Surjit, Convenor of the Youth Wing, presented their case to the Chief Secretary and RSS leaders, emphasizing the need for the Meetei/Meitei community to be recognized as a Scheduled Tribe. They also raised concerns about the demographic changes in the state, particularly the rapid growth of the Kuki-Zo tribes, which they claim has displaced indigenous populations in areas such as Moreh, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur. Additionally, the delegation highlighted the large-scale deforestation for poppy cultivation, which they linked to narco-terrorism in Manipur.
The MMTU had previously sought an appointment with RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, but he was unavailable due to state tours. During the meeting, the delegation submitted a memorandum to Chief Secretary Samir Kshirsagar and extended an invitation to RSS leaders to visit Manipur and assess the situation firsthand.
