Imphal, Aug 23:
In a bid to reignite the passion for mathematical sciences among the youth of Manipur, the Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC) and the National Research Centre (NRC) are organizing a unique event aimed at inspiring the next generation. The “Special Lecture & Interaction Program on the World of Mathematics – Research, Challenges & Career” will be held tomorrow, at 1 pm, in the Naorem Sanajaoba Public Library Hall, located within the NRC Building, opposite Manipur University’s main gate.
The event will feature Prof. Shanta Laishram, a distinguished mathematician and Head of the Theoretical Statistics and Mathematics Unit at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), New Delhi. Prof. Shanta, a native of Manipur, has earned international recognition for his contributions to Number Theory and Cryptography. He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge, having recently returned from a prestigious month-long visit to the United States, where he participated in the International Conference on Fibonacci Numbers and Their Applications in Claremont, California, and visited several renowned universities including California State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Purdue University Northwest.
Prof. Shanta’s journey is a reflection of the possibilities that lie ahead for students in Manipur. Born and raised in Imphal, he pursued his Graduation in Mathematics from DM College of Science in 2001, followed by an MSc and PhD from the School of Mathematics at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. His work has been recognized with the Harish Chandra Memorial Award for the best PhD thesis in Mathematics at TIFR in 2008. After completing his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Waterloo, Canada, he joined ISI New Delhi, where he has been a beacon of excellence, advancing to the rank of Professor in December 2020.
The MIYC and NRC are calling on students from Classes IX to XII, as well as college and university students across Manipur, to seize this opportunity. The lecture and interaction will not only provide insights into the mysteries and challenges of mathematics but also offer a glimpse into the career possibilities within this fascinating field. This event is more than just a lecture—it’s a chance for young minds to connect with a role model who has walked the path they might one day follow.
