A mass signature campaign under the theme “Campaign to Move Freely in Manipur”, initiated by social activist Malem Thongam, continued today at Awang Sekmai in Imphal West district.
The campaign seeks to ensure unrestricted public movement within the state, particularly along national highways, and to oppose activities that allegedly restrict free movement and threaten public safety. The organisers stated that the initiative aims to safeguard the rights of the people of Manipur and to pursue legal remedies to stop what they described as unlawful activities by certain organisations.
The signature collection programme was held at the office premises of the Advance Women Society, Awang Sekmai, and witnessed the participation of a large number of women, including elderly participants.
The organisers also referred to a press statement issued by the Committee on Tribal Unity on December 17, 2025, in which a warning was allegedly issued against Malem Thongam in connection with his peace campaign. They stated that despite a complaint being lodged with the Kangpokpi Police Station through Heingang Police Station, no concrete action had been taken so far.
The campaign, according to the organisers, would continue in the interest of the people of Manipur and the matter would be pursued through appropriate legal channels.
