Imphal, June 18:

People of Manipur today paid fitting tribute to the martyrs of June 18, at which 21 people died and several others injured during mass uprising of June month in 2001.
The day is observed as the great Uprising and Unity Day by United Committee Manipur and the All-Manipur United Club Organisation.
As usual, a large number of people came to the memorial site of the martyrs at Kekrupat here in Imphal West.
The day is observed to commemorate the peoples’ uprising for protection of the integrity of Manipur.
President of UCM Konthoujam Joychandra and president of AMUCO Nando Luwang reiterated their stand for protection of the administrative and territorial integrity of the state of Manipur.
“No community, particularly those coming to Manipur from outside the state have no right to demand separate state or country in the state of Manipur”, Joychandra said adding that the people of the state have no problem in any demand for a separate state inside the territory of Myanmar. The UCM president said this in connection with the present turmoil in the state. He further said that the people of the state have stood firm for the protection of their land and the people will continue to stand for the protection of the land.
The UCM president also warned the elected representatives of Manipur to work in the interest of the people. He said that the game plan to distort the state of Manipur by external agency is well known and UCM and the people of the state will strongly resist to any kind of act to distort the integrity of the state.
Due to the prevailing situation in Manipur, this year observance has been reduced to just paying of floral tributes to the martyrs.
“We have reduced the scale of the observance of the Great June Uprising to pay our tribute to those Heroes who had shown their Supreme Sacrifice in laying down their lives for safeguarding the Territorial Integrity of Manipur on this day of June 18 in the year 2021”, President of AMUCO Nando Luwang told media persons.
Addressing at the side line of the observance at Kekrupat Nando Luwang said that the observance of the Unity Day is not targeted against any particular community or organisation of Manipur but towards the divisive policy of the government of India. He said that every section of the society must be knowing the government of India has been playing divisive game and spreading communal hatred for the last many decades.
The people of Manipur have been opposing this very nature of the government of India, said Nando adding that today’s observance of the Unity Day is the symbol of the Manipur People in safeguarding the territorial integrity of Manipur. Speaking on the present turmoil in Manipur as spearheaded by Kuki Militants who are under the Suspension of Operation Pact since 2008 and some Burmese militants that sneaked into the Indian Territory stealthily, Nando Luwang said peace would not prevail in Manipur until and unless these Kuki militants or narco-terrorists were completely driven out of Manipur. Now, they have indulged in every form of violence in Manipur, he reiterated. Even though knowing all these things that would jeopardize India’s internal security, the government of India has been keeping mum since May 3, 2023 the day the ATSUM sponsored violence erupted in Churachandpur District of Manipur, he stressed.
Stressing on the complete silence of India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi over the present conflict situation in Manipur, Nando Luwang told the media persons that the government of India should be held accountable and take full responsibility for all the happenings in Manipur for any eventualities in future. Asking here have all the security forces gone, why the government of India has not taken any action against the Kuki militants for breaking the ground rules of the SoO Pact, Nando Luwang asserted that the people of Manipur has remained vigilant to fight against any force that would disturb the integrity of Manipur. Lastly, he appealed that any individual or organization should not try to disintegrate Manipur with special call on the Kuki militants to shun away all violent activities for disintegrating Manipur.
