Suspicious death of a student sparks mob attack on academy boarding facility in Bishnupur

The suspicious death of a 16-year-old higher secondary student triggered mob violence at Brighter English Academy’s boarding facility in Bishnupur district on Saturday night, with angry protesters vandalising the premises and setting fire to furniture and other belongings.

The student was found hanging from a tree near the Kangbei Maril River, close to Oinam Bazar under Nambol police station, on Saturday evening. The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.

The incident sparked outrage among local residents, while the deceased’s family suspected foul play and questioned how a minor staying under the institution’s care could have died outside the boarding premises.

The family has urged the state government to order a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the student’s death and fix responsibility, if any.

A senior police official confirmed the attack on the boarding facility, stating that security personnel had to fire tear gas shells and resort to crowd-control measures to disperse the mob.

The official also dismissed social media claims that the entire facility had been gutted, clarifying that the fire was confined to furniture and other belongings outside the building.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident, while additional security personnel have been deployed across the Nambol-Oinam area to prevent further violence.
