The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell at Manipur University successfully organized a One Day State Level Swachha Campaign and Voter Awareness program on March 31, 2024, in celebration of “My First Vote For The Country.” The event commenced with a Swachha Campaign at 7 AM at the Traffic Island and Auditorium of Manipur University. The cleaning drive was initiated by Prof. Oinam Ranjit Singh and Prof. Ch. Ibohal Singh, HODs of the Department of Ancient History and Archeology, and Library and Information Science respectively, along with Dr. Maibam Nodiyachand Singh, NSS Cell Coordinator, Manipur University, and volunteers and Programme officers from various colleges and MU.
The Voter Awareness Drive was the second part of the program, held at the Auditorium of Manipur University at 10 AM. Shree Nakul Chandra Deori, Youth Officer, NSS, NER Guwahati, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Yumnam Premananda Singh, HOD of the Department of Law, MU, was the Guest of Honour, and Dr. Maibam Nodiyachand Singh presided over the function.
Dr. Premananda highlighted the role of youth in elections and outlined the criteria for selecting the best candidate. The Chief Guest emphasized the importance of Swachhata (cleanliness) and voter awareness among the youth, emphasizing the need for a healthy and clean body, mind, and society.
Dr. Nodiyachand Singh shed light on the importance of electing the best candidate for the upcoming MP election and expressed concerns about the understaffing at the SNO office, which handles NSS affairs in Manipur.
He called upon the state government to allocate more staff, highlighting the necessity of one SNO, one stenographer, one statistical officer, one LDC, and one peon, all of which would be fully funded by the Central Government. Dr. Nodiyachand also stressed the significance of NSS in Manipur, emphasizing its potential to drive development and progress from various angles.
Dr. Sonia Ningthoujam, Programme Officer of Imphal College, delivered the welcome speech, while Dr. L. Ladhoni Devi, Programme Officer of Biramangol College, extended the Vote of Thanks. Approximately three hundred volunteers and twenty Programme Officers from Manipur University and its affiliated colleges participated in the event.
