Imphal, March 23:
Manipur Police have registered six FIRs against various WhatsApp groups and social media channels for allegedly spreading fake and inflammatory news, which they claim is creating fear, panic, and public alarm in Churachandpur district, a region predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community.
In an official statement, Manipur Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against any individual or group found spreading misinformation, inciting communal tensions, or disturbing public order through social media platforms. Authorities have urged the public to verify information before sharing it online to prevent the spread of false narratives that could escalate tensions in the state.
The crackdown follows an increase in unverified news and misleading posts circulating on social media, which police believe could jeopardize peace and security in the region. The law enforcement agencies have assured that they are monitoring online activities closely and that anyone found guilty of violating cyber laws or inciting violence will face strict consequences.
Meanwhile, police have encouraged citizens to report any suspicious or misleading content to the authorities to help maintain peace and stability in Manipur. Legal provisions, including the IT Act and relevant sections of the IPC, will be invoked against those involved in spreading fake news, they added.
The police action comes at a crucial time as the state continues efforts to restore normalcy and prevent communal unrest.
