Imphal, Nov 12:
In a sharp rebuke, Thokchom Sujata, Convenor of the women’s organization Imagi Meira, criticized Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and his administration for their inability to protect Meitei civilians, including women and children, from attacks by Kuki militants. Speaking at a press conference at the Manipur Press Club, Sujata condemned the government’s lack of response to the escalating violence, which has recently claimed the lives of multiple civilians.
Sujata detailed the worsening security situation in Manipur, citing recent attacks in which a woman farmer was killed in Bishnupur district, two people were injured in Imphal East, and seven civilians, including minors and women, went missing following a militant assault in Jiribam district. “The government’s silence is deafening as coordinated attacks continue on the periphery villages,” she said, demanding accountability from the administration.
Imagi Meira has renewed its calls for intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to step in and bring lasting peace to the state. “We have appealed time and again, yet the lack of concrete action is deeply disheartening for the people of Manipur,” Sujata said, stressing the humanitarian crisis faced by local communities amid the ongoing conflict.
Expressing frustration with the central government’s handling of the situation, Sujata questioned the influence of foreign militants in the escalating violence, stating, “The crisis in Manipur has been intensified by foreign forces. This lack of decisive action raises questions about Manipur’s status within India.”
Sujata urged Prime Minister Modi to take immediate action, emphasizing his known capacity for diplomatic intervention. “We know the Prime Minister’s ability to resolve international conflicts; now, it’s time for him to focus that attention on saving Manipur,” she concluded.
