Imphal, Dec 20:
The Manipur Congress staged a protest at Congress Bhawan in Imphal, condemning the false allegations being leveled against the party’s top leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Former Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh addressed the protesters, criticizing the ruling government for raising these allegations. He emphasized that the Congress is standing firm against the baseless claims and the unjust treatment of its leaders.
The protest comes in the wake of a serious incident in Parliament, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that he was physically pushed by BJP MPs within the Parliament premises. Kharge claimed that this physical assault caused him to lose his balance, forcing him to sit on the ground in front of Makar Dwar.
Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, further called for an inquiry into the incident, accusing the BJP MPs of “assaulting” him. He stated that the attack was not only on him personally but also an affront to the dignity of the Rajya Sabha and the office of the Congress president.
The altercation between opposition and NDA MPs reportedly escalated after a disagreement over the alleged insult to B.R. Ambedkar, during which former Minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi was injured. The BJP, in turn, accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing a senior member, but Gandhi has denied the allegations.
In response to the incident, Manipur Congress is demanding the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah, calling for accountability over the physical confrontation and the ongoing tensions in Parliament.
