The Supreme Court judge, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai who is also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) today virtually inaugurated free legal services camps and medical camps at two locations namely at the Indoor Stadium and Khomdonbi Memorial English School, Kakching Khunou, Kakching District.
It may be mentioned that a five-member Supreme Court Judges delegation led by Justice BR Gavai arrived in the State today. The delegation comprising Justices’ BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan and N Kotishwar are also in the State to attend events marking the 12th anniversary of Manipur High Court tomorrow. Justice Gavai today virtually inaugurated legal services camps and medical camps across the districts of the State.
Under the Legal Services Authorities (LSA) Act, 1987, NALSA provides free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities, thereby, promoting justice on the basis of equal opportunities.
At Kakching, around 700 people availed the facilities at the camps which have been jointly organised by the Legal Services Authority, Thoubal and the District Administration Kakching, sponsored by the Manipur Legal Services Authority under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
The programme was graced by Rohit Anand (IAS), Deputy Commissioner, Kakching district; Dr Thaodem Rajen Singh, Chief Medical Officer Kakching; Ksh Maheta Devi, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Thoubal; Neera Sinam, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Kakching; N Modhu Singh, President, Kakching District Bar Association; Kherdananda Potsangbam, SDO Kakching and Takhellambam Millikan Singh, SDO Waikhong.
As part of the event, essential relief materials were also distributed to the IDPs. The legal services camps have been conducted to connect IDPs with the government welfare programs, ensuring access to vital benefits such as healthcare, pensions, employment schemes and identity document reconstruction.
The medical camps provided facilities related to Medicine, Surgery, Obst & Gynae, Sports Medicine, Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, CTVS, Forensic Medicine and Pathology. Also, different essential medicines were distributed.
On the other hand, a Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign was organised by District Election Office, Kakching at the two locations where facilities were made available for the addition of new voters, as well as for the deletion or correction of existing entries in the electoral roll. As part of the campaign, free T-shirts and caps were distributed.
