Imphal, Nov 23:

The United National Liberation Front (UNLF), led by Koireng, is all set to mark its 60th Foundation Day on November 24. In a solemn address delivered by the UNLF Central Committee, the movement reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the cause and called upon the people of Manipur to unite in their fight against external oppression and internal divisions.
The Central Committee acknowledged the numerous challenges posed by India’s governance, including the divisive influence of Kuki separatist groups. The statement urged the Meitei community, in particular, to remain steadfast in their efforts to protect the integrity of the state and reclaim its autonomy. It stressed the importance of unity among the indigenous peoples of Manipur, emphasizing that only through collective strength could they challenge the centralized power structure of India, which continues to impose its rule over the region.
Furthermore, the Central Committee reflected on the need to adapt to changing political and military circumstances. The movement’s leadership highlighted the necessity for new strategies and approaches to navigate the evolving situation, underlining their core objectives of justice, freedom, and a transformed socio-political order for Manipur.
In line with this, the Central Committee released the Chahigi Warol (Annual Statement). The statement urged all supporters to renew their dedication to the movement and redouble their efforts in pursuit of Manipur’s sovereignty. It also emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the liberation struggle, despite the challenges and complexities facing the region.
The statement further acknowledged the long-standing history of oppression that the people of Manipur have faced since the forced annexation of the state by India in 1949. The Central Committee condemned the imposition of repressive laws such as the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), and the military presence that has plagued the state for decades. These policies, the Committee noted, have led to widespread human rights abuses and the continued marginalization of Manipur, both politically and economically.
The Committee pointed out that the systematic economic subjugation of Manipur has reduced the state to a “captive market” for India, leaving its resources and potential underutilized. This economic dependency, they claimed, has been strategically designed to keep Manipur under control and prevent it from achieving self-sufficiency.
In spite of these systemic challenges, the people of Manipur, under the leadership of various revolutionary groups like the UNLF, continue to resist India’s dominance. The Central Committee emphasized that the struggle is not only for political autonomy but also for the reclamation of cultural identity and the creation of a self-sustaining socio-economic framework.
The Committee concluded its statement by reaffirming that the liberation movement, now entering its 60th year, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Manipuri people. It is a struggle rooted in historical injustice, the need for sovereignty, and a vision for a future where Manipur can govern itself without external interference.
Looking ahead, the Central Committee called on all revolutionary and community organizations to consolidate their efforts and strategize for the next phase of the struggle. They stressed that the movement’s ultimate goal is not merely a reaction to India’s rule but a deliberate effort to restore Manipur’s rightful place as an independent entity, free from external subjugation. The Committee emphasized that only through unity and unwavering resolve could the people of Manipur hope to achieve their long-cherished dream of self-determination and justice.
