Imphal, Nov 26:
The Kabui Union, along with affiliated civil society organizations (CSOs) in Manipur, has expressed concerns regarding the timing of the Manipur Cultural Exchange Festival 2024, citing the ongoing unrest in the state. In a statement, the Kabui Union noted that it is inappropriate to hold the festival under the current circumstances.
The organization referenced a local newspaper report indicating that the Indigenous People’s Forum, Manipur, plans to host the event from November 29, 2024, in Chadong, Kamjong District, despite the persistent tension between indigenous communities and the Chin-Kuki-Zo groups, referred to in the statement as “narcotic terrorist groups.”
The Kabui Union emphasized that if the forum truly prioritizes the welfare of indigenous communities, efforts should focus on supporting those displaced, emotionally distressed, and traumatized by the ongoing conflict. They highlighted the plight of children and families who have been uprooted and are in dire need of assistance.
Referring to the festival’s theme, “Manipur United by Diversity,” the Kabui Union questioned whether such celebrations could heal the deep wounds caused by the violence, which they claimed has resulted in over 255 deaths and displaced approximately 60,000 people since clashes began on May 3, 2023. The Union recounted a recent tragic incident in which an eight-month-old child and five women were killed, attributing the violence to Kuki militants.
The Union compared the situation to the Trojan War, drawing parallels with the betrayal symbolized by the Trojan Horse, and warned that celebrating amidst turmoil could lead to further misunderstandings among communities.
To honor the lives lost and pray for peace, the Kabui Customary Council, Manipur, has planned a prayer ceremony and customary rituals on November 27, 2024, at Sawombung Abui Khunjao. The Kabui Union urged communities to join in solidarity and prioritize the grieving and healing process over celebratory events.
The statement was jointly signed by representatives of the Kabui Students’ Organization, Kabui Women’s Union, and Kabui Customary Council, underlining their commitment to preserving the identity and unity of the Kabui people.
