Justice K. Sunder, the second senior-most judge of the Madras High Court, was sworn in today as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, becoming the tenth person to hold the post.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, where Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office. The ceremony was attended by senior officials, judges, and dignitaries.
Justice Sunder’s appointment, made by the President of India on September 13, 2025, followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on September 11. He succeeds Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, who retired on September 14.
His elevation continues a trend of judges from the Madras High Court leading the Manipur High Court, including former Chief Justices Ramalingam Sudhakar, M.V. Muralidharan, and D. Krishna Kumar.
Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice Sunder completed his law degree at Madras Law College as part of its first five-year integrated law course. Enrolling as an advocate in 1989, he built a career at the Madras High Court, specialising in civil law, before being elevated as a permanent judge in October 2016.
Over nearly a decade on the bench, he has delivered several significant judgments, earning recognition for his contributions to civil jurisprudence.
