In a series of successful joint operations, the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other security forces have carried out extensive search and recovery efforts across various districts of Manipur during the first week of September 2024. The operations led to the recovery of a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and other warlike materials, underscoring the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts among the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other security forces.
Based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of weapon caches in areas such as Liklai, Mashemjang, P Geljang, Thoroilok, Gelmon, Molphai Tampak, Leisanbung, and Maulnghat in Churachandpur district, joint operations were launched by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, and Manipur Police. The search and area sanitization operation resulted in the recovery of two 9mm pistols with magazines, a single-barrel 12mm bore firearm, 17 locally improvised long-range mortars, an AK-series rifle, a carbine machine gun, a sniper rifle, an INSAS rifle, three single-barrel rifles, another 12mm bore firearm, three pistols, six improvised mortars, and warlike stores. All recovered items were handed over to the Manipur Police. Additionally, a bunker in Molphai Tampak was destroyed on September 7, 2024.
In a separate joint operation on September 5, 2024, Indian Army and Manipur Police forces uncovered an arms cache in the fringe areas of Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts, recovering a total of 11 weapons, six locally made mortars (pompis), and ammunition. In another operation based on intelligence inputs regarding insurgents’ hideouts, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police launched a joint search in the Loiching Ridge area of Kangpokpi district on September 7, 2024. The operation led to the recovery of a country-made drone, a 7.62mm sniper rifle, a .22 rifle, a single-barrel rifle, a 9mm pistol, 12 single-barrel rifles, two 5.56mm assault rifles, a self-loading rifle, an assault rifle, improvised long-range and short-range mortars with stands, grenades, and other warlike stores.
In Bishnupur district, an intelligence-led operation spearheaded by the Indian Army in Bunglon, Maulsang, and Vaikul Lok Nala areas resulted in the recovery of a modified AK-47 rifle, three large country-made mortars, two medium country-made mortars, a small country-made mortar, five grenades, and explosives.
Similarly, in Thoubal district, a joint operation was carried out by Assam Rifles and Manipur Police following intelligence inputs about the presence of arms and ammunition in the Tentha area. The operation led to the recovery of four single-barrel shotguns, ammunition, and warlike materials.
First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed in connection with all these operations, and the recovered items were handed over to the Manipur Police. These proactive and decisive actions by the Assam Rifles, along with other security forces, are seen as crucial steps in restoring peace and stability in the region.
