The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 today under the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” The observance commenced with a cycle rally, flagged off by Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, from the Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal. Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, Imphal and Dr. S. Gojendra Singh, Head of Psychiatry Department, RIMS, Imphal led the rally from Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal to Lamphel traffic island, Sanakeithel , Watham Leirak Police Outpost corner, ICAR, Lamphel Police station, Officers’ Club, Mortuary Gate and ended at Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Imphal.
In his address, Director RIMS, Imphal, highlighted the alarming global trend of increasing suicide rates, with particular concern for the student demographic. He noted that the Director General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has recommended a week-long observance of World Suicide Prevention Day across medical colleges including Dental College & Nursing College of RIMS, Imphal.
The week-long activities at RIMS will include interactive sessions and various initiatives aimed at educating and engaging students on the critical issue of suicide prevention. The central theme of these activities will be “Suicides are Preventable and let’s talk,” focusing on breaking the silence around mental health and encouraging open discussions.
Director RIMS, Imphal highlighted the gravity of the situation, referencing recent statistics indicating that suicide claims approximately 720,000 lives globally each year. He particularly stressed that among individuals aged 15 to 30, suicide is the third leading cause of death.
