JCILPS’s General strike paralyses normal life in the state

Imphal July 26: The 18 hours’ statewide general strike called by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) in protest against the brutal attitude of police while controlling the agitating students demanding Inner Line Permit System in the state, paralyzed normal life in the state.

Vehicular movement was very thin in and around Imphal City, inter-district bus services were suspended, shops and other business establishments were closed during the hours of general strike. The attendance of employees at government offices was also thin due to the general strike.

General strike supporters burnt tyres and piled up logs on the road in many parts of the state. A truck was vandalized at Wangoi area at around 11 am this morning.

In Thangmeiband area general strike supporters blocked the road since early morning. However, police timely controlled the situation by picking up five general strike supporters at around 9 am from Thangmeiband area. The general strike was very effective at Heirangoithong area also as womenfolk of the area block the road since early morning.

The general strike which came to effect since the midnight of July 25 will last till 6 pm of July 26, 2014.

It may be mentioned that the general strike was called by the JCILPS against the brutal attitude of police towards the students who tried to storm the State Legislative Assembly demanding to implement Inner Line Permit System in the state. The action of the police was criticized by various social and political organizations.
