RIMS sets to introduce Post Graduate studies in dentistry

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) the only medical college in the Northeast to figure amongst the top 50 medical Institutions & Universities of the country, is planning to introduce Post Graduate studies in dentistry soon.
RIMS Director Prof A Santa Singh informed this to this reporter in a chat on the sideline of 4th graduation day celebration of 2016-2021 batch of BDS here on Thursday afternoon.
The first medical teacher from NE facilitated by Federation of Obstetric & Gynecological Societies of India in September, said, “We’re trying our best to introduce the PG course here.”
Earlier addressing the graduation function,Prof Santa, advised the young dental surgeons to learn more in the dentistry sector and feel the pain of patients while attending them and also try to bridge the communication gap between patient party and doctors.
The state Chief Secretary Dr Rajesh Kumar who also attended the day’s graduation ceremony called upon those young graduates to explore the concerned subjects and provide free service to the needy once in a month or so.
On the other hand delivering his speech, the Principal Dr B Praveen Reddy of the Dental College, RIMS said there are more than 999 registered dental surgeons in Manipur and every year 100 more were added.Dr Reddy also expressed the need to introduce PG course in the nine year old Dental College considering the current demands.
Altogether 41 students(13 from Manipur,7 each from Meghalaya,Tripura,All india quota, 5 from Nagaland,4 each from Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram)from seven NE states including Sikkim (excluding Assam) were awarded the graduation certificates during the ceremony.
It may be mentioned that RIMS has so far produced 3,560 doctors, 1968 specialists,143 Bachelor of Dental Surgery doctors, 282 B.Sc nurses and 67 M Phil students since its establishment in 1972. In addition, a total of 67 students have been trained in M Phil in Clinical Psychology.
In July, the Executive Council of RIMS had agreed to increase the number of PG seats in the Departments of Radio-diagnosis, Anaesthesiology and Orthopaedics from the existing 2 to 6, 10 to 22 and 2 to 4 respectively. It also agreed to the starting of an Emergency Medicine course (MD) and DM course in Cardiology.
