Imphal, Nov 16:
The Government of Manipur has announced a temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services in seven districts of the state, citing concerns over the prevailing law and order situation.
The order, issued by Chief Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi, stated that there is a risk of anti-social elements exploiting social media platforms to disseminate inflammatory content, including hate speech and false rumors, which could incite violence and disrupt public harmony. The affected districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.
The suspension, effective from 5:15 PM on November 16, 2024, will remain in force for two days. Broadband services, including VSATs, ILL, and FTTH connections, are also restricted, with exemptions granted only for government offices or cases approved by the state government.
The government has invoked Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, to enforce the suspension, emphasizing the need to prevent the spread of disinformation and mobilization of violent demonstrations.
The order highlighted the potential for loss of life, damage to public and private property, and widespread disturbances to communal harmony if such measures were not taken. It further warned that any violation of the order would result in legal action.
