International Day of Older Persons observed in Imphal

The International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2025 was observed in Imphal with events highlighting the contributions and welfare of senior citizens. This year’s theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights,” emphasised the importance of elders as active participants in society.
At Imphal Hotel, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla graced the occasion and distributed gifts, aids, and assistive devices to senior citizens, reaffirming the State’s commitment to their dignity and well-being. In his address, the Governor stated, “Elders are not merely recipients of care but active participants in shaping our society. Their wisdom, resilience, and experiences are invaluable assets that guide families and communities toward harmony and progress.” He further stressed the importance of intergenerational collaboration, noting, “The energy and innovation of our youth, when combined with the stability and insight of our elders, create a powerful force capable of addressing both local and global challenges. Dignity, respect, and inclusion for our senior citizens are matters of justice, not charity.” Governor Bhalla also appreciated the sustained efforts of the Social Welfare Department in implementing welfare schemes for the elderly.
Simultaneously, at Dharmalaya Hall, Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai, Imphal East, the Senior Citizens’ Forum organised a programme attended by Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, as Chief Guest, and G.A. Ravichandra Sharma as the president of the function. Addressing the gathering, Satyabrata Singh said, “Younger generations have a responsibility to care for our elders. Intergenerational bonding and welfare measures are essential to ensure a dignified life for senior citizens.” He announced the construction of a dedicated office building for the Senior Citizens’ Forum at Paradise Club, Wangkhei.
G.A. Ravichandra Sharma spoke on the history of observing IDOP, noting that the first official observance was on October 1, 1991. He highlighted the establishment of the Senior Citizens’ Forum, Imphal East, in 2010 as a platform for elders to voice concerns, participate in activities, and share experiences. Quoting, “Life is full of dreams, yet it is not a dream; life is real,” he said that the aspirations of senior citizens are often balanced, constructive, and shaped by experience and reflection.
Dr. Chongtham Norendra Singh, Sr. Advocate, also shared his views on the theme, stressing the importance of older persons in local and global initiatives. As part of the celebrations, seventeen elders from different Assembly Constituencies were felicitated. Ex-servicemen, local elders, students, and office bearers of the forum were present, making the observance a fitting tribute to the state’s senior citizens.
