Imphal, March 10:
The Interfaith Forum Manipur (IFM) has urged all groups to allow the tense situation to calm down. The forum expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries, especially among women.
Deben Bachaspatimayum, the Convener of IFM, said that the violence in Kangpokpi on March 8, which was also International Women’s Day, was particularly upsetting.
The forum appreciated the Central Government’s efforts in controlling arms and reducing violence. Although these actions came late, they had helped ease tensions and created hope for dialogue. However, Bachaspatimayum noted that the situation had worsened again, undoing the progress made. Despite this, he remained hopeful for a peaceful solution.
He suggested that the state government seek help from senior citizens, women peace-makers, retired government officers, and respected religious leaders to prepare the ground for important actions like road clearance.
IFM also raised concerns about innocent people who are still missing and the thousands of displaced persons, including women, children, and the elderly, who long to return home.
According to Bachaspatimayum, those affected by the conflict do not want more violence, as it reduces their chances of resettlement. He also said that even security personnel likely wanted peace so their families could live safely.
The forum highlighted the suffering of children, who have already faced hardships due to the pandemic and ongoing violence. It stressed that children’s rights to safety and education should be the top priority. Bachaspatimayum urged everyone to think about children’s future before taking any actions and to work on building trust with their neighbors instead of fighting.
He reaffirmed IFM’s support for peaceful solutions and encouraged all groups to focus on long-term peace instead of short-term conflicts.
