Imphal, Feb 9:
Sotin Kumar, leader of the CPI Manipur State Council, in a meeting with press today, has raised serious concerns over the ongoing political and social turmoil in Manipur, warning that the state faces the risk of division or being downgraded to a Union Territory.
According to Sotin Kumar, the upcoming Assembly session has triggered an intense power struggle within the ruling party, with factions fighting over the Chief Minister’s post. While the Governor has summoned the Assembly, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had earlier resisted holding a prolonged session. Now, the question remains whether he will retain his position.
Amidst this political uncertainty, Sotin Kumar alleged that the Indian government, in collusion with Kuki militants, is attempting to weaken Meitei village volunteers. He also criticized Meitei MLAs for flying to Delhi in pursuit of political power instead of addressing urgent issues at home.
He further pointed out that the resettlement of displaced villagers has not been carried out on a war footing, leaving many in distress. Given these developments, he expressed fears that Manipur’s territorial integrity is at stake, with the possibility of the state being divided or downgraded to Union Territory status.
