Imphal, Nov 26:
The Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Manipur, celebrated its Foundation Day today at the Manipur Press Club, marking the occasion with discussions on the state’s past, present, and future.
The event was graced by N. Bandana Devi, IAS, Mission Director of the Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission, Government of Manipur, as the Chief Guest. Prof. N. Mohendro Singh, Chairman of IDS Manipur, presided over the function, while Y. Indramani Singh, former Project Director of the Manipur Skill Development Society and retired Joint Director of the Planning Department, and Th. Joykumar Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Thangjam Agro Industries Pvt. Ltd., attended as Guests of Honour.
A special talk on the theme “Manipur Today and Tomorrow” was delivered by Rinku Khumukcham, Editor of Imphal Times, offering insights into the state’s historical resilience and current challenges.
In her keynote address, Dr. N. Rajana reflected on the journey of IDS, stating that the institute was established in 2001 to conduct various welfare programs. He noted that the organization had been dormant for nearly a decade due to the professional commitments of its members, many of whom were government officials posted across regions. However, with many members now retired, IDS resumed its activities in 2021. The foundation day, originally slated for November 13, had to be postponed due to prevailing law-and-order issues in the state.
During his speech, Rinku Khumukcham highlighted Manipur’s history as a testament to survival and renewal. Citing episodes such as the Chahi Taret Kuntakpa (Seven Years of Devastation) and the destruction during World War II, he emphasized the state’s resilience through repeated challenges. Touching upon the ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, he acknowledged the severe economic and social turmoil but expressed optimism that unity and determination could pave the way for a stronger, renewed Manipur.
Th. Joykumar Singh, MD of Thangjam Agro Industries Pvt. Ltd., addressed the impact of the current crisis on business and entrepreneurship in the state. He pointed to the prolonged internet ban and highway blockades as significant hurdles for the business sector. Stressing the need for immediate action, he urged the government to lift these restrictions, enabling economic recovery and supporting entrepreneurs. “The ongoing crisis has deeply affected everyone,” he said, “and it is now up to the wisdom of the government to chart a stronger future for the state.”
The event provided a platform to discuss both the challenges facing Manipur and the collective efforts required to overcome them, underscoring IDS’s renewed commitment to the state’s development.
