The ceremony honoured the brave souls who laid down their lives defending their motherland against British invasion. Floral tributes were led by Professor N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, who attended the event as Chief Guest. The programme was presided over by Joychandra Konthoujam, Chairman of the organising committee, with Chingkhei Luwangcha gracing the occasion as Special Guest of Honour.
As part of the event, five eminent personalities were recognised for their significant contributions to journalism, education, and public awareness. The awardees included Rinku Khumukcham, Editor of Imphal Times; Hemanta Kumar Ningomba, Senior Journalist; Paonam Labango Mangang, Editor of Kangla Pao; Jit Ningomba, Chief Editor of Elite TV; and Dr. Yumnam Premananda, Head of Law Department, Manipur University.
Chairman Joychandra Konthoujam, in his address, stressed the importance of honouring those who stood for freedom and dignity. “The 1891 war was not just a military battle but a powerful message that Kangleipak (Manipur) rejected annexation and aspired to remain a sovereign land. Even in the face of certain defeat, our forefathers fought with unyielding spirit,” he said, referring to the British war records that acknowledged the intense resistance from Manipuri warrior against the Tamu column .
Sending a strong political message, Joychandra urged the people to reject in future elections those MLAs who allegedly compromised the interests of the state for personal gains in Delhi. “We must choose leaders who truly care for the land,” he added, stating that internal disunity has allowed central forces to dominate local decisions.
The committee also announced that the event will be observed annually to continue spreading awareness of Manipur’s history and honour those keeping its legacy alive through their work.
