A fierce gunfight broke out today morning between suspected cadres of the banned Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) (S Kamson) and armed Kuki underground groups near Kharam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, triggering panic in surrounding villages, officials said.
The clash reportedly began around 7:40 a.m. when ZUF’s armed wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF), launched an operation targeting alleged illicit poppy cultivation and unauthorised underground camps in the area. The Kuki groups responded with gunfire, resulting in an exchange that lasted several minutes before subsiding. State authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported, and ZUF personnel returned safely to their camps.
The gunfire was heard in areas bordering Imphal West district, reigniting fears among villagers who recall earlier violent encounters between armed groups in Manipur’s hill regions. Additional security forces were deployed to the periphery to prevent escalation and ensure public safety.
In a statement, ZUF S Kamson said the operation was conducted at Kharam Vaiphei village, Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi, around 7:40 a.m., targeting Kuki underground outfits. The group claimed that at least two to three Kuki cadres may have been seriously injured, while ZTF personnel returned to their base safely. The action, the ZUF said, was prompted by concerns over the submission of a topographical map supporting demands for a Separate Administration, alleged illicit poppy cultivation, activities along German Road and Tiger Road, and the establishment of unauthorised camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework within Zeliangrong Inpui traditional territory.
The ZUF clarified that it does not oppose the legitimate aspirations of the Kuki people within their recognised native land but asserted that no Kuki land exists within Zeliangrong Inpui ancestral territory. The outfit reaffirmed its commitment to protect its people, land, and property and warned that any encroachment would not be tolerated. Those allegedly occupying the areas unlawfully were urged to vacate immediately to avoid further escalation.
The incident highlights the continuing tension over territorial claims and illicit activities in Manipur’s hill districts, despite ongoing efforts by security forces to maintain peace in the region.
