Manipur Government has allotted two temporary market sheds for Mao vendors at Chingmeirong here in Imphal.
According to a source, Chairman of PDA, T Mangibabu has assured the traders and various civil society organizations, who have been joining hands along with the Mao vendors, to construct two market sheds at the Northern side of Cheimeirong’s Eastern Motor.
Meanwhile Chief Minister of the state, Okram Ibobi Singh has also instructed the Chairman to expedite the construction of market as soon as possible in view of the problems being face by the Mao traders.
The vegetable vendors had shifted their market here in Imphal after the Southern Angamese body had prohibited them selling goods at Kohima over the issue of Dzuko and Kojiiri dispute. The traders have been selling their goods at Khuyathong- Nagamapal area since July 3.
Since then, organizations like IPSA, LFWP, ACOAM LUP, Pandam, IPAK, Kangla Mei, KIL, KSA etc have been pressing the state government to arrange a market shed for the Mao vendors in and around the city.
The source also added that the state Government had decided to establish the temporary market shed considering the problems.
The proposed 59 meter long market sheds will accommodate around 50 vendors and the construction of the sheds would be taken up under the supervision of Planning and Development Authority (PDA). After the completion of the shed, it would be handed over to Imphal Municipal Council.
However the name of the market is not yet confirmed as the vendors comprises various communities apart from Mao.
