Imphal, Feb 23:

Members of FEGOCTA staged protest rally near M.B. College, Palace Compound against the government’s failure to issue Orders of 7th UGC and Regulations, 2018 today. The college teachers continue Cease work and Sit in protests in all the Government Colleges.

The FEGOCTA, the apex body of the government college teachers in Manipur also expressed strong condemnation to police violence on the protesting students.

A statement said that the college teachers are on democratic protests against the non-implementation of UGC policy of 7th Pay and Regulations, 2018.

“FEGOCTA appeals to all to restrain from any kind of violence. The 5th FEGOCTA agitation is not against the students. The announcement of the schedule of the college students’ union elections during FEGOCTA cease work appears to be an attempt to create conflict between teachers and students”, it said.

“If the Government was committed in implementing UGC policy and fulfilled the three written assurances to FEGOCTA in 2019, the present unfortunate crisis would have been avoided. FEGOCTA firmly believes that the unprecedented 5th FEGOCTA agitation can be resolved any time, if there is a strong political will. It is high time to stop blaming college teachers. FEGOCTA is compelled to go for fifth agitation as the last resort. There are many compelling reasons. Can anyone believe that all government college teachers including Principals are denied the complete salary for over nine years? The younger teachers are not promoted for the last twelve years. Basic infrastructure and facilities like urinals and toilets including for the lady teachers, adequate classrooms, non-teaching staff, proper budget allocation etc are not provided properly. Only when teachers are on agitations, focus has been still on the teachers and their pay. Who is really concerned and bother about the issues and problems of collegiate education in Manipur? When the teachers are always in agitating moods even without physical agitation, will there be quality collegiate education in Manipur? Blaming the teachers will not resolve the fifth FEGOCTA agitations” the statement said.
